My adventure began when my 31 year old gas cooktop blew up while I was standing at it. Once my heart started up again I closed the gas valve closed the cleaned up a mess. It’s surprising to me how many different cooktops around 36 inches there are with difference size cutout requirements. I narrowed it down to about 5 cooktops just so I wouldn’t have to saw granite.
As there was not a single Amazon review previously for this model I skimmed right past it ....cause just too risky for me normally. I kept coming back to this unit for its combination of features, appearance, and price. Stainless steel, iron grates, good styling, and the safety system that automatically cuts off the gas if the flame goes out. It seemed stand-out at this price point....and it fit my cutout perfectly...
...So I rolled the dice and purchased it without a single review to read. I was prepared to feel like a sap when some funny junk arrived but it was just the opposite experience. Arrived in about 3 days. Packaged well and no dents or scratches. I would save all the old gas fittings and regulator from your old unit. This unit comes with a new regulator and one elbow but I had use one of the fittings off the old regulator.
It works great. Knobs feel like they are probably die cast aluminum however they don’t feel too cheap or like plastic. Valves feel smooth. The stainless steel is thin gauge but the way it’s stamped gives it enough strength. When you turn the flame height all the way down the burners don’t flicker out, even if the air is disturbed. (I noticed some of the other cooktops at this price point had negative reviews on that issue. )
Can’t believe more people haven’t bought and reviewed this thing. Couldn’t be happier for the price. Hope this helps.
So I feel we gave this product a fair trial. The first one we got had a faulty regulator, it stripped out real easy. The exchange process was super easy (thank you). The stove top is really beautiful, lightweight, and has so much potential! So we got our second one in, got a professional to install it (150.00) and i was so excited. However, my hpuse smelled like gas upon first use. The plumber said it was because he has to bleed the lines. I aired out my house (because it was overwhelming) so then it was time to try my new stovetop and I WAS SO EXCITED!) Whelp, this is where the very helpful review about the ignition issues comes into play.... it took several seconds (6-10) for a flame to appear. Once you let the knob go though, the flame would go out. It would take 2 or 3 times to actually get it to light. And gas would still keep flowing. The double flame in the center only lit. It would come on the 2nd time you lit the burner. I am not inept, ive been cooking on a gas stove for a decade now. We promptly took the stove out, bought a more reliable brand name and my husband had it installed within 30 minutes, sealed and everything. We were cooking with NO GAS SMELL in no time. We didnt need to 'bleed the lines'. I can leave my home and go to sleep at night not stressing out about whether my house was going to blow up. BUYER BEWARE.
Pros: pleasant, modern looking, reasonably priced stainless cooktop, nice build feel, smaller under side to better fit into existing opening 18.5" x 34.75" so didn't need to enlarge opening unlike similarly priced Empava brand, which has extra large bottom which couldn't fit into my existing opening.
Cons: biggest issue, spark igniter requires patience and too much force holding down knob while turning to lit the fire, which you would expect to stay lit, but not always. This is especially true for the double ringed center station. Inside ring would lit, but not the outer. It's too finicky and can be dangerous if you're not paying attention. Thermomate says it has a feature to auto shut off leaky gas, I did not witness this function kick in and wasn't about to wait until the gas fumes fill my kitchen.
My old cooktop Kitchenaid (unfortunately 2-3X price) was so much easier when it comes to lighting the fire. Simply push down with gentle force and turn to igniter position until fire lit, then turn to desired fire setting. No need to exert force turning dial from ignition to fire. Fire never goes out or need to re-light. Wish Thermomate would mimic this very smooth intuitive fire lighting process from Kitchenaid.
With Thermomate if you lit the fire and go away expecting the fire to stay lit, well, that's going to be a serious health hazard.
Conclusion: if you can live with the finicky, temperamental igniter, have good wrist strength and pay careful attention about fire staying lit, then buy this very beautiful reasonably priced cooktop. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
The Thermomate stainless steel cook top with cast iron black burner grills was easy to install in our counter top with the enclosed cutout guide to use for fine-tuning the old cook top's cutout. The gas hookup is straight forward, with the included regulator. The European safety design with thermocouples to ensure the burners are lit is a pleasant feature to keep unwanted gas from escaping into the kitchen air. Momentarily holding the control knobs down is quickly learned.
All-in-all, we feel it is an excellent product and for the price, and outstanding value that will add beauty and functionality to any kitchen using gas cook top technology.
First of all, this cooking top is not that durable, you will know that after you open the box, it is light, and feels not good quality. Also it is a little bit short for width, which will leave a small gap which might be ok for some because you won’t notice it after the installation, but there also might be good chance that oil or water may get in that gap, so you may want to check the caulking from time to time in case this may happen.
But this was easy to install.
